Effective pedagogy, expertly delivered: Haremi's collaboration with the Royal Society of Chemistry

  • Haremi team

The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) is an international organisation connecting chemical scientists with each other and with society as a whole. Founded in 1841 and based in London, UK, it offers award-winning professional development for educators looking to improve their pedagogical and subject knowledge.

Haremi was chosen to develop 'Effective Pedagogy', the first self-led online course for teachers on RSC's new professional development learning platform. The course covers the principles and practices of effective chemistry teaching, including:

  • How cognitive science impacts teaching and learning.
  • Strategies to improve literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Adapting teaching to students with a range of learning profiles.
  • Methods to improve students' practical skills and competencies.

Our development team for this exciting project included a Project Manager, Learning Designer and Editorial Manager. We adopted a structured approach to developing this e-learning course, dividing the process into distinct phases.

Analysis & Design

We began by auditing existing materials, identifying key requirements in collaboration with course stakeholders, and fast-tracking a prototype version of the course for testing with pre-release focus groups.

Development

We refined the learning materials by incorporating interactive features to promote active learning and we ensured the content was engaging and accessible for a diverse teaching audience. A central focus of the course design was to integrate social learning through a variety of tasks. This included discussion prompts centered on real-world chemistry classroom scenarios, encouraging teachers to reflect on their current teaching techniques and engage with their peers.

We storyboarded and commissioned animations to introduce each topic, incorporating still images from these animations strategically throughout the modules to create a cohesive learning experience.

Implementation & Evaluation

We developed eight RSC-branded learning modules that were xAPI-compliant and integrated then into the learning platform. Following a period of real-world testing and use feedback, we made final adjustments to ensure the course was ready for its official launch.

We thoroughly enjoyed collaborating with the RSC Education team on this project and look forward to partnering with them on more courses in the future.

'Effective pedagogy' is now live on the RSC's professional development page for teachers.
